Administrative Policies

Recording Credit for study at other institutions

Policy:

All Coursework Degrees

This policy should be read in conjunction with the Advanced Standing Policy.

The difference between 'cross-institutional', 'study abroad' and 'exchange' credit and other advanced standing is that a formal agreement with a student can be reached in advance of the study being undertaken to offer a specified amount of credit. The credit offer detail (subject(s) to be undertaken, points to be awarded as a consequence) needs to be appropriately recorded.

Procedure and Practice:

All Coursework Degrees

Cross Institutional Studies - Outbound:

Specifically named subjects will only be set up for those instances where the host institution's subject forms part of the University of Melbourne curriculum (i.e. the subject appears in the University of Melbourne Course & Subject guide). Upon completion of the study, marks and grades from the host institution will be entered against these subjects using the University of Melbourne grading schema (translation, if required, takes place prior to release of results to students occurring to a schedule agreed between the institutions).

Students studying Cross-Institutional subjects which do not appear in our handbook will be enrolled into the appropriate number of 12.5 credit point generic subjects, named, for example, "Cross Institutional studies", which bear no weight.

Advanced standing (credit) will be awarded on completion. Details of the study undertaken can be entered as comment with the credit entry in the Student System. A future decision needs to be made about what should appear on the transcript, if this is deemed appropriate.

Exchange - Outbound:

Students studying overseas on exchange will be enrolled into an appropriate generic subject, named, for example, "Exchange - University of Somewhere", which bear weight.

Advanced standing (credit) will be awarded on completion. Details of the study undertaken can be entered as comment with the credit entry in the Student System.

Study Abroad

Students studying overseas will be enrolled into an appropriate generic subject, named, for example, "Study aboard - University of Somewhere", which bear no weight.

Advanced standing (credit) will be awarded on completion. Details of the study undertaken can be entered as comment with the credit entry in the Student System.
