Definitions

These are working definitions that may be changed to ensure consistency with terminology employed in the Student System.

Commonwealth supported
Means:
  • courses in which 'Commonwealth supported places' are available to students;
  • courses where 'Fee-Help' support is available to students;
  • courses that a student may be eligible for income support from Centrelink (income-tested schemes such as Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY or Austudy Payments). This definition specifically excludes employer funded programs, such as those offered by Melbourne Consulting and Custom Programs.
Study load
the number of points in which a student is enrolled (including any element of a teaching period, such as pre-teaching, teaching or the assessment period) at a particular point in time.
Teaching period
a defined period of time for a particular subject during which a student is expected to be enrolled and available for attendance at specified teaching and learning activities (lectures, tutorials, laboratory, etc.).
Standard Semester
the defined standard teaching periods, semester 1 and 2, of an academic year, approved by Academic Board annually. The semester includes a teaching, 'swot vac' and assessment period.
Non-Standard Semester
a formally approved semester for a particular degree program, which either commences before or after or finishes before or after the standard semester, but that significantly overlaps with the standard semester and shares the census date.
Summer Term
A formally approved teaching period of six weeks, followed by an assessment period of one week, taking place before semester 1 commences.
Non-standard teaching period
a defined teaching period other than those defined as standard teaching periods, such as intensive subjects and 'winter break' subjects.
Assessment period
Each teaching period is followed by an assessment period, during which the final piece of assessment (examination or assignment) falls due. The assessment period for semester subjects is four weeks (one week for the summer term). An assessment period of one or more weeks must be defined for non-standard subjects.
Pre-teaching period
a defined initial period of a subject, during which a student is expected to complete specified readings and/or other preparation before teaching commences. Where a pre-teaching period exists, a student must be enrolled for this period.
Year-long
a subject taught over both semester 1 and 2.
'Swot Vac'
a period held after the standard teaching semester and before the assessment period of a semester subject, during which neither classes nor assessment takes place.
Fixed, full-time course
A course where a student must successfully complete all subjects of the course during a particular academic year and maintain a full-time enrolment. A student who fails any subject is not permitted to progress to the next year of the course before repeating the failed subject.
