Insurance

Insurance is one of the key issues to be considered when a student is involved in off campus activities while a student at the University of Melbourne.

The Insurance Office of the is responsible for all matters related to insurance at the University of Melbourne http://www.unimelb.edu.au/insurance/

The office has the responsibility to protect the University from financial loss as a result of:

This is achieved through the provision of advice and establishment of insurance, self insurance and risk management practices.

University of Melbourne students are automatically protected by the University's insurance program whilst they are engaged in their UoM course related and a range of other skill/knowledge based activities. IT IS VITAL THAT YOU CONFIRM THAT ANY STUDENT UNDERTAKING AN OFF CAMPUS ACTIVITY IS ENROLLED IN THE APPROPRIATE COURSE OR SUBJECT. STUDENTS WILL NOT BE COVERED BY THE UNIVRSITY’S INSURANCE IF THEY ARE NOT CORRECTLY ENROLLED. Staff should consult with their relevant Student Centre in the first instance. Student Advisers will be able to clarify details relating to individual student enrolments.

The principal classes of insurance are:

Work Experience/Off Campus Electives  - both local and overseas

Please note that students can only be covered by the University’s insurance policies if their Work Experience / Field / Outside Placement activity is undertaken with the knowledge and consent of the University.

Knowledge Transfer Grants

Knowledge Transfer recognises the two-way flow and uptake of ideas between the University of Melbourne and the broader community.
The University of Melbourne’s Knowledge Transfer imperative is designed to build stronger relationships and partnerships with the community and is underpinned by three principles.
They are:
•       That they generate intellectual capital in ways that mutually benefit the University and the external partners with which it engages.
•       They are linked within the University’s teaching and research activities.
•       That Knowledge Transfer activities are characterised by their responsiveness and relevance to international, social, economic,
environmental and cultural issues.

In 2008, the University made available funds to promote excellence in knowledge transfer through the establishment of the Knowledge Transfer Awards. The Awards were designed to recognise the role of knowledge transfer within the University’s strategic vision, and to reward initiatives that achieve the goal of a two-way relationship and uptake of ideas between the University and the broader community. Awards were available to both staff and students of the University.

For 2008, 26 Dreamlarge Student Knowledge Transfer grants were awarded to students from a variety of faculties. A number of these were in support of projects to be completed overseas.

All University of Melbourne students participating in this University of Melbourne administered program are covered by the University’s Insurance Program.

Specific details can be found at: http://www.unimelb.edu.au/insurance/students/.
