Risk Assessment

Anticipating and Identifying Risk Assessment:

Competency based Environment Health and Safety (EHS) training courses are run by the EHS Unit.

By enrolling on EHS Training (via Themis), staff can benefit from an induction session about anticipating and correctly identifying risk issues.

Go to  EHS Roles and Responsibilities, situated on the EHS Training page.

Understanding Risk Management : an Example of Good Practice

One aspect of Alison’s role is to ensure that Staff and Student Safety Off-Campus procedures are updated and that staff are trained appropriately to conduct risk management assessments.

Alison has prepared a power-point presentation on risk management.

Faculty MDHS Presentation : How To Conduct Risk Management

The following notes accompany this presentation:

  1. The risk management presentation is aimed at developing skills to staff and students to look at the activities they are doing, identify the hazards in those activities, assess the level of risk, and where the risk is significant, implement control measures.
  2. The first part of the session is the introduction to the concept of Hazard and Risk, and an explanation of the two methodologies that the University uses.
  3. The case studies at the end of the presentation are used to document some ‘sample’ assessments.
  4. They are a little ‘obvious’, however, by that nature, they are useful to help staff and students think clearly about the concepts
  5. We firstly break down the activity into tasks – little steps at each stage of the activity
  6. We then go through potential hazards for each of the tasks – we start by trying to only select 1 hazard per task
  7. We then use either methodology to assess the risk
  8. Where we find a risk is medium, high or very high, we look at the concept of risk control
  9. The aim is to find the RAW risk of a hazard, before controls are in place
  10. Then document these controls (and come up with new ones where needed)

Documentation is important. For research, teaching and administration, if you don’t document your actions, you are leaving a large part of the picture out.
