    No our services are only available to:
    • current and former University of Melbourne students

    You can’t see a Careers Consultant, but the Careers Resource Centre can provide useful information for staff.  Other resources:

II. Career planning/changing courses

    You could:
    • research occupational information by looking at course folders eg. What Can I Do With An Arts Degree or the Job Guide
    • seek advice from faculty or departmental course advisers
    • obtain advice from Careers Consultants about career choice and job prospects

  2. Can you help me with re-enrolment dates and subject selection?

III. Finding work

  1. I am unsure of what type of job to look for.

    You can:
  2. I am looking for part-time or casual work, where do I find a list of jobs?

    Log on to Careers Online our job and events database where students and graduates can search for jobs.  Students will need to log on using their Student ID Number and Family Name. Hit the “Search for Jobs” link to enter preferred search criteria.  University of Melbourne graduates and former students will need to log on via the Graduate Log In section.

  3. What career programs are available to help me seek employment?

    Careers & Employment run a number of programs and events throughout the year including:
    • KickStart Skills 4 Work – lunch-time seminars designed to assist with practical aspects of transition into the workforce (eg. resumé writing, interview skills).
    • KickStart Your Career – programs tailored to suit the needs of students in specific faculties and departments focussing on career planning, job hunting and the transition to work.
    • Employer information sessions – a great way for students to find out about local and international organisations and their recruitment programs.
    • Student Work Placements (SWP) – enhance students’ employability skills via career-related unpaid work opportunities.
    • Student Ambassador Leadership Program (SALP) – extra-curricular program that aims to develop leadership qualities and skills.
    • Career Mentor Connection (CMC) program – linking students with mentors working in their related industry or profession.
    • Graduate Careers Fair – a great way for final year students to speak directly with employers.  
    • Employment Experience Fair and Global Opportunities Fair – for all penultimate year students seeking vacation work, internships, cadetships and cooperative year programs and working holiday opportunities in Australia and overseas.

    The Careers Resource Centre has information on obtaining voluntary work. Careers & Employment have trained Careers Consultants with extensive knowledge of overseas opportunities.

VI. Final year students

  1. What companies have graduate programs and when do they recruit?

    Employers start recruiting students from early March. Employers may have a booth at the Graduate Careers Fair.  A list of upcoming events can be found on Careers Online.

  2. What dates are you running industry/careers fairs?

    Careers fairs for 2008 are listed at http://www.services.unimelb.edu.au/careers/student/oncampus/index.html

  3. Can you tell me how many graduates get jobs each year?

    See Graduate Careers Australia for a report – produced annually.
    GDS data is provided by the University Planning Office and is available in our Careers Resource Centre. Specific data for courses may be available from departments/faculties.

  4. Do you have information on starting salaries?

    Yes, you can access the Graduate Starting Salaries booklet which is held on reserve in the Careers Resource Centre.

VII. Graduates/Alumni

  1. I just graduated and am looking for a job.

    Vacancies are advertised on Careers Online. Students and alumni will need to log on using their Student ID Number and Family Name. Hit the “Search for Jobs” link to enter preferred search criteria.

  2. I just finished my course and I am not sure what I want to do or can do with my degree.

  3. I just graduated and now I can’t log in to Careers Online.

    Careers Online will still recognise your log on details after you graduate. If for some reason the system doesn't recognise your log on details a form will apear for you to fill in. Access is granted within two working days of submitting this online form.

  4. Should I go onto postgraduate study or try to find a job?

    Our Careers Consultants are available to speak with you about options. Specific course information can be found at the Information Centre in Swanston Street.
