The University of Melbourne consistently attracts high achieving students from within Victoria and, increasingly, nationally and internationally and has been ranked by its peers as one of the top universities in the world (Times Higher Education Supplement 2006 World University Rankings). At No. 22 overall, The University of Melbourne’s strong peer reputation puts it in company with Harvard, Cambridge and Oxford. The University also topped the 13 Australian universities listed in the top 200 for the employability of its graduates.
Our graduates enjoy early success in the labour market. In 2005, the percentages of both local and international University of Melbourne Bachelor degree graduates available for full time employment who were employed full time 4 months after graduation were considerably higher than the state and national averages. Our postgraduate students also demonstrate a high level of success in their employment outcomes (2005 Graduate Destination Survey, The University of Melbourne Planning Office, July 2006). Our graduates are more likely to begin their careers in professional occupations compared to those from other universities; and our alumni profiles demonstrate that they continue to build quality careers.
From 2008, the University is introducing the Melbourne Model, a new structure for its courses. The focus will be on a 3 year broad based bachelor degree followed by a 2 year masters degree to acquire specialised professional training. Some existing courses will also continue to enrol in 2008. Careers & Employment is one of the largest and most active tertiary careers services in Australia – and indeed internationally. As an integral component of students' Melbourne Experience, we offer a broad range of high quality services and programs. These include our on-campus and off-shore recruitment events, which enable students and employers to connect in optimum ways, as well as professional skills development and work experience programs to enhance students’ employability.
