Resumé Review
What is Resumé Review?
Resumé Review is a 20 minute one-to-one feedback session about your resumé, including suggestions for improvement. Advice is provided on content, layout and how well your resumé targets the position you are applying for. Spelling and grammatical mistakes are pointed out, but not corrected.
Staff can review resumés or curriculum vitaes (CVs), cover letters or other application documents - however only one item can be reviewed per session. Each session costs $7.50 (inc. GST).
To gain the most benefit from your Resumé Review session, please read the following information.
Prerequisites for Resumé Review
- Complete Module 4 of Resumé Express (access Resumé Express via Careers Online and follow the prompts to register your completion).
- Read the relevant section in Wise Up for Work - this publication is free from the Careers Resource Centre (CRC) or download via Careers Online.
- Gather ideas and prepare a first draft of your resumé. Attend one of our KickStart Skills 4 Work resumé writing lunchtime seminars held during semester and make use of resources at the CRC.
- Write a final draft of your resumé. Type it up in electronic form (don’t forget to spell check!) and print it ready for reviewing.
Key issues to consider as you draft your resumé
- Academic background: What fields did you concentrate on - majors? Did you do any outstanding or significant pieces, a thesis or major paper, relating to your specific expertise? Do you have any specific skills that grew out of this - computer-assisted data analysis or archival research?
- Personal background: What are your major achievements outside of work and university? Are you well-travelled? Have you been exposed to different cultures? Have you participated in extra-curricular activities at University or in the community?
- General skills: Throughout your degree you would have also acquired general, functional skills - communication, creativity, leadership and interpersonal skills. Work these into your resumé.
Remember that you are not simply offering yourself to an employer, you are taking on a job for yourself. Be certain that you know all the relevant details about the position and that it is something that you will be happy doing.
Finally… check your draft using the Resumé health check section.
What to bring to your Resumé Review session
- Your receipt for payment for your Resumé Review session.
- A typed and printed copy of your resumé (and/or other relevant documents) so that the Resumé Reviewer can mark suggestions directly onto your resumé.
- If applying for a specific job, the job advertisement/ position description and selection criteria.
Who will review your resumé?
Postgraduate students’ resumés will be reviewed by a Careers Consultant. Undergraduate students’ resumés will be reviewed by other Careers & Employment staff members, including current postgraduate or later-year undergraduate students. All Resumé Reviewers have undergone intensive training and supervision, have related work experience and/or are studying in a relevant area such as human resources or psychology.
Sometimes Resumé Reviewers may be seeking graduate employment in the same organisations as you. We view this positively, as they have an enhanced understanding of the application process and what the employer is seeking. If you have a concern about this, please discuss it with the Enquiries Officer when booking your appointment.
