Types of jobs on Careers Online
Every year there are around 7,500 vacancies lodged on Careers Online. Some employers have multiple positions available for the vacancies they advertise, especially those who are recruiting for graduate programs. The range of vacancies on Careers Online is listed below.
Part-time, casual and temporary jobs
These jobs range from tutoring, childcare, sales, and hospitality to office administration, research assistance, and course-related work. Householders, small companies and large corporations lodge vacancies throughout the year.
Completing a short course may give you a competitive advantage when seeking employment. Obtaining paid work during your studies can help you to develop general skills as well as provide you with financial support but before you start working there are some important issues you need to consider.
If you are an international student who wishes to work part-time/casually while studying you need to apply for a work visa. The work visa contains restrictions on the number of hours you can work during semester. Information is available from the International Student Services Office.
Vacation work programs, cooperative placements and internships
Often referred to as Industry Based Learning, these opportunities enable you to obtain paid, professional course-related work experience over a specified period of time. For example, vacation work maybe offered for 4-12 weeks during the holiday breaks, internships maybe offered during vacations or in conjunction with your academic studies, whereas cooperative placements usually require the deferment of your course for between 6–12 months. The majority target penultimate year students from particular disciplines. A large proportion of vacation work programs are advertised in 2nd semester. Employers often assess the students' work performance during their employment for their potential as graduate employees.
Other opportunities include cadetships (when a student is employed full-time or part-time whilst completing their course) and employer scholarships, which involve paid work experience and are usually based on academic merit.
Unpaid work experience opportunities

Graduate employment programs
Graduate employment programs typically involve a lengthy period of training and development in the initial stage of ongoing employment with an employer. In some cases this will provide well-rounded experience in different areas of the organisation or in other cases it might involve intensive specialised experience in one area.
Local employers recruiting for graduate employment programs mostly advertise at the beginning of 1st semester. They target final year students or recent graduates to commence employment in January or February of the following year.
These employers will often target students from particular disciplines. They will be interested in your academic results, general workplace competencies (teamwork, communication, self initiative, leadership, problem solving, critical thinking, etc.), technical skills and business acumen. They will also want to know about your interest in the work being offered and your knowledge of the organisation.

Immediate start graduate positions
Generally, immediate start graduate vacancies are for graduates who have completed their studies within the past year or so and who are available to commence full-time employment as soon as possible. This may also include postgraduate students who are able to combine full-time employment with their studies. Some vacancies may target a specific discipline whilst others may be open to a range of disciplines.
