Spring Racing Carnival

The Spring Racing Carnival in Melbourne is quite well known internationally and culminates in the running of the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November at Flemington Racecourse just 3 or 4 kilometres north of the city.

The Spring Racing Carnival typically lasts for one month from mid-October through to mid-November but the key dates are the Caulfield Cup in the second or third week of October and the four race meetings at Flemington during Melbourne Cup week.

Staff numbers peak during this time and the venues hire upwards of 300 extra staff to cope with the large crowds.

The Flemington race track is operated by the Victorian Racing Club. Job vacancies are advertised in major and local newspapers in June and also appear on their website. The Caulfield race track is operated by the Melbourne Racing Club. Employment opportunities are advertised on their website sometime in June or July.

Telstra Dome (formerly Docklands Stadium)

Telstra Dome has been in operation since 2000 and has become a popular venue for a variety of special events and sporting fixtures. Like the MCG, during the Australian Rules Football (AFL) season from late March through to September there are sporting events there on a weekly basis.

Event work occurs on weekends or late afternoons and evenings and hours vary according to the fixture of the sport or event being played. Most of the recruiting is done before Christmas every year when an advertisement will appear on the web site. Mid-year is another time that staff may be recruited. Students who have a strong background in customer service are encouraged to apply.

On the Telstra Dome website go to the information link to check out employment opportunities

Students interested in hospitality work (i.e. food and beverage) are advised that a company called Delaware North is responsible for recruiting staff for hospitality positions for Telstra Dome. They also supply staff for other venues such as Vodafone Arena and Rod Laver Arena.
