Informational interviewing
As a career research strategy, informational interviewing is the process of talking to someone working in a career field you’re interested in to figure out if it’s a pathway you’re suited to.
It is also an excellent strategy for expanding your network.
By developing a friendship with someone working in industry through this process, you are broadening your network of people who may be able to assist you in finding employment, and introduce you to others within industry.
Informational interviewing can assist you to:
- demystify the career field or position you’re interested in
- clarify whether this is a career path you’re suited to
- help you understand the job requirements in terms of skills so you can tailor your resumé appropriately
- expand your network within the area you’ll be looking to find work
