On the day of the interview - tips towards success
Your responses to the interviewer's questions are only one way they will assess your suitability for their organisation. They will also look at your personal presentation, verbal communication skills, ability to build rapport, punctuality and so on.
Here are some tips to help you succeed on the day of the interview
- Know where you are going and how you will get there. Allow plenty of time.
- Be punctual, well groomed and wear appropriate attire for the profession you have chosen.
- Be friendly, professional and smile!
- Use the names of the people you're introduced to. Expect to shake hands - do so firmly.
- Try to relax - nerves are natural, but slow down and take a few deep breaths to compose yourself
- Be aware of your body language - don't let it detract from what you have to say
- Listen carefully but don't be afraid to ask for the question to be repeated or clarified.
- Speak clearly and confidently - don't mumble or go too fast.
- Don't lapse into informal or familiar language no matter how relaxed the interview is
- Maintain eye contact with the interviewer (glancing at others if there is a panel)
- Prepare a couple of pertinent and well-informed questions to ask. If when asked, you forget them, simply respond with "You have answered the questions I had throughout the interview".
- Take a copy of any documents you were requested to bring (but don't bring unnecessary ones)
- Thank the interviewers for their time
