Employer recruitment activities
Employers who wish to recruit students (penultimate and final year) for their vacation and graduate employment programs use a variety of activities to promote these opportunities via Careers & Employment (C&E), as listed below.
You can keep up-to-date with what’s going on by:
- Visiting C&E and reading our notice boards
- Logging on to Careers Online to view upcoming events
- Subscribing to our weekly e-bulletin.
- You may also see employers’ posters around the campus that have been distributed by C&E.
The Graduate Employment Coordinator, Graduate Employment Assistant and the Careers Enquiries Officer can help you with enquiries about employers participating in on-campus recruitment activities (Phone: +61 3 8344 6686).
Careers fairs
Careers fairs provide you with an opportunity to liaise with employers who are recruiting from your discipline in an exhibition style environment on campus. You can explore the employment opportunities offered by a range of industry, business and government organisations.
To gain the most benefit make sure you check out our tips for interacting with employers and prepare beforehand. If you have researched the employers who are attending the fair you can target those of greater interest and convey your interest in a meaningful way. Employers are always impressed by students who have insightful and pertinent questions to ask.

On-campus employer presentations enable employers currently offering graduate or vacation employment programs the opportunity to inform you specifically about their programs and associated recruitment processes.
- The presentations usually include information about the nature of the work, the training and development involved, the disciplines being targeted, the selection criteria and techniques that will be used to determine successful applicants and company details.
- Employers often bring recent graduates with them to speak about the work they do.
- There is usually time available at each session to network with the employer so do some background research on the organisation so you can ask informed questions and make a good impression. Go to Tips for interacting with employers for more information.
- Employer presentations are generally held at lunchtime (between 12:00pm - 1:00pm and 1:00pm - 2:00pm) or in the evening (at 5.30 pm). A schedule of upcoming sessions can be found on Careers Online
Student Societies that organise employer information sessions or similar must refer to the Procedures for Coordinating Employer Recruitment Campaigns (PDF file / 100KB)
Targeted emails and mailouts
Employers advertising graduate or vacation employment programs will sometimes send you an email or mail you a package of information as part of their recruitment campaign.
In such instances they will target the cohort of students in which they are interested via C&E. Employers do not have access to your contact details. The University of Melbourne aims to enhance the employment outcomes of its students and as a result will facilitate the provision of information about employment opportunities to you.
On-campus interviews
Some employers conduct their employment interviews on campus as a convenience to you. Careers & Employment assists employers to make the appropriate arrangements. Please be aware that if you have an employment interview on campus you should treat it in exactly the same way as if you were being interviewed at the employer’s location. And remember to dress in appropriate attire (that is, most employers are fairly conservative, so business clothing is usually expected).
