Activities in Semester 2

  • BIBLE STUDY begins Monday 3rd August weekly: lunchtime, 1.05-1.55pm, held in Union House Chaplaincy Rooms, 3rd floor above the Noodle Shop. Led by Wes Campbell. ‘The Acts of the Apostles’ is a possible text.

  • MIDDAY PRAYER recommencing on Wednesday 5th August,  weekly 1.15-1.45pm – in Old Arts Room 152. (note different venue).

  • HIROSHIMA DAY VIGIL Thursday 6th August a: beginning 8.15am until 9.00am - on the concrete lawn, east of Union House. An opportunity to remember the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and  an opportunity to resolve to work for abolition of all nuclear weapons. We will stand in silent witness for about 30 minutes, then offer readings and personal statements.

  • BOOK LAUNCH 5.30pm Thursday, 6th August: a history of the Australian Student Christian Movement, A Century of Influence, by Renate Howe, with speaker Prof David Pennington. Alan Gilbert Building (first floor Executive Lounge), entrance off cnr Grattan & Barry St. Finger food will be served. SEE BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION.

  • 19th August: ECUMENICAL CHRISTIAN SERVICE, 1-2pm, Gryphon Gallery, in the 1888 Graduate Building (near cnr of Grattan & Swanston Sts): arranged by chaplains and student groups  followed by some simple eats.

  • QUESTION: ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A REGULAR ECUMENICAL STUDENT CHRISTIAN GATHERING AT MELBOURNE UNI? A number of us have been talking about gathering with other people as a helpful and necessary part of being people of faith. There we can explore the Christian story and its implications for us, as people have done since the earliest days of the church. This might include a simple meal and liturgy; we could ‘break bread’. I suggest that we gather and talk about what is possible: where and when to meet: whether during the week or on a weekend, in a church building or in a university setting or a home. If you are interested in the general idea, let Wes know and we will meet to discuss the possibilities.

  • THURSDAY FORUMS: 1-2pm  on several Thursday lunchtimes with invited speakers (project workers, theologians and scholars) to address various themes such as ‘science and faith’ (a continuing of discussion from first semester; Asylum Seekers & Refugees in Australia’, ‘postmodernity and Christian faith’, ‘Searching for Jesus’, ‘God after the death of God’. Dates and details to be announced later.

    ASCM BOOK:

In 1993 a Group of Friends of the ASCM was formed and began to prepare for the writing of a history of the Movement. The General Committee of the ASCM enthusiastically endorsed the idea. Academic historian Dr Renate Howe, an associate professor at Deakin University, was invited to become its author with support from the University as well as the ASCM Centennial History Working Group. The Centenary of the ASCM was celebrated in 1996 at a Centenary Gathering in Canberra attended by over three hundred SCMers covering six generations from the 1920s onwards. This event provided an important impetus to the project especially in helping to facilitate the more than 70 extended oral interviews which have been so foundational for the subsequent history. The now completed work is a history of a very influential movement in so many aspects of Australia’s social and political development in the 20th Century. It also provides a perspective on the history of Australian universities during this period, covering nation-defining debates on the possibility of belief, issues of peace and war, and Australia’s relationship with Asia. It was in the SCM that so many students formed their attitudes, often found their life long partners, and developed a commitment that would sustain them through their lives.
