Sexual Assault

Sexual assault is any sexual behaviour that makes you feel uncomfortable, frightened or threatened. It is sexual activity that you have not agreed to, where another person uses emotional or physical force, coercion or threats against you.

Males and females can be sexually assaulted at any age, from when they are a few days old through to when they are in their 90’s.  People can be sexually assaulted regardless of their cultural background, religion, race, nationality, skin colour, sexual orientation, class, education, lifestyle, ability or disability (SECASA website).

How you feel after surviving sexual assault is very individual.  There is a wide range of feelings and experiences following sexual assault, and no one is more “normal” than another. Many survivors of sexual assault seek help some time after the event.  The passage of time does not mean that you are not entitled to help and support, nor that you should have “got over it”.  What is important is that you receive the support and help you need to recover.  Often survivors of sexual assault experience symptoms similar to those described by survivors of trauma; however, the complexity of the issue means many other symptoms or experiences may exist for survivors of sexual assault.

If this has happened to you the most important thing to do is get to a safe place, immediately. Then call one of the services listed below. However, if you are unsafe, at risk of further harm, or in need of an ambulance, call 000. Whether the assault happened recently or some time ago it is important not to be all alone with this experience. There is free help available.

The University of Melbourne Counselling Service has experienced counsellors who can help you with this issue, as well as giving you an idea of what other assistance may be available. There are Centres Against Sexual Assault (CASAs) located throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria which provide a range of services in addition to 24 hour emergency or crisis care.
