Wellbeing Services Counselling Service

Natural Disasters

During a natural disaster such as a bushfire, many people experience losses, witness suffering of some kind, or come into contact with others closely affected. As a result, people can feel helpless, sad, numb, guilty or angry.

These events may also disturb beliefs and values about one’s self, how one thought one would respond in a traumatic situation, unsettle meaning and purpose, and cause a loss of trust in personal security, community and environment.

Most people exposed to a traumatic event, or in contact with those who have, recover with the support of family and close friends, and do not require professional assistance. Survivors move through the recovery process in their own individual ways. However, for some people, professional assistance is very useful.
