Retention, Graduate Attributes and Personal Functioning: Assessing the Role of Universities in Assisting Students to Navigate the Psychological Demands of Higher Education

A tension in the student experience of higher education is between enjoyment of independence, and the anxiety of freedom. This tension is played out in ways that impact on student academic retention, and on the development of graduate attributes that a higher education experience promotes. The role of universities in understanding and responding to this tension is explored in this paper with reference to retention efforts. This leads to a discussion of the expectations a university can reasonably have in taking some responsibility for the social and personal, as well as academic, development of students. This paper by Jonathan Norton is in submission for the journal Higher Education.
