Academic Support Worker Guidelines

Download this document : DOC : 110KB.

This document outlines the roles, responsibilities, and expectations of staff employed on a casual basis undertaking Academic Support Work in the Disability Liaison Unit (DLU). An understanding of the standards and expectations outlined in this document is an important part of the role.

Nature of Employment

Work undertaken for the DLU is of a casual nature, as specified in your Contract of Employment for Casual General Staff (HR 20G) and Duty Statement. Your hours of work will vary according to student demand. Although work occurs with and for students with a disability, the employer is the DLU and the University of Melbourne.

Professional Boundaries

The University is committed to maintaining academic standards. The role of the Academic Support Worker is to facilitate the experience of learning so that a student can produce work that is reflective of their own ideas, skills, and capabilities. At no time should any activity undertaken by a support worker compromise academic integrity.

Non-attendance of Students

ASWs facilitate but do not replace the learning experience for students with a disability. In general, students do not receive support if they are not present. If a student does not attend a scheduled booking, you are instructed not to perform the duties of a booking, but to wait for 20 minutes before leaving the booking. You will still be paid for a booking unless you have been given 24 hours notice of its cancellation. You are to notify your supervisor if a student does not attend.

Absence

You are to notify the DLU in advance if you are unable to attend a booking.

You will not be paid if you do not attend a scheduled booking.

Administrative Responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the Academic Support Worker to ensure that all necessary employment information provided to the DLU and the University is accurate.

ASWs are required to open and maintain a Melbourne University Themis Staff Account. Self-service pay submissions are cross checked against authorised bookings and any discrepancies will not be paid. Pay submissions should be submitted fortnightly, in accordance with publicised cut-off dates.

Any variations to booking details must be authorised by the Resource Coordinator.

Accessible Format Editing

Should you be unable to meet the specified completion dates you are expected to notify the DLU immediately to ensure that there is a timely provision of accessible formats.

Debriefing

If you would like to talk through any work related issue do not hesitate to contact the Resource Coordinator.

Staff and students of the University are able to access the University of Melbourne Counselling Service which is a free and confidential service.

Confidentiality

Information and material acquired during a booking shall not be disclosed with the exception of knowledge of a general nature gained during work which occurs in a public setting.
