Quality Infrastructure
University Strategic Plan:
To improve the aesthetic qualities, amenity and functional utility of the University's
buildings and estates, and to equip and maintain all University facilities so as to promote academic
enterprise of the highest international standards.
Disability Related Issues:
Physical Environment
Significant funds have been allocated to disability access in recent years greatly improving the
physical accessibility of the University. As a large organisation with a long history, the University
of Melbourne has experienced difficulties in achieving comprehensive accessibility as a result of:
- large numbers of heritage buildings where balancing accessibility and heritage imperatives are problematic
- declining government funding to the higher education sector impacting on funding allocated to infrastructure improvements
- difficulties associated with documenting the features of facilities, impacting on the strategic prioritisation of building works
- difficulties in communicating accessibility issues across the University community.
Information Technology Infrastructure
Significant funds have been allocated to adaptive technology over many years, facilitating independent
participation for many students with disabilities. As student numbers have increased, the University has
experienced difficulties in providing equitable access to technology infrastructure as a result of:
- no mechanism being established for facilitating the upgrade of assistive technology
hardware and software
- existing assistive technology resources (hardware and software) having geographic
restrictions and time constraints on individual use.
