Quality Research
University Strategic Plan:
To strengthen the performance and reputation of the University of Melbourne as a major international research university, and as a destination of preference for outstanding research postgraduate students nationally and internationally.
Disability Related Issues:
Participation of students with disabilities in post-graduate study and research
The University of Melbourne is Australia's premier research University. Postgraduate study is inexorably linked with quality research and participation in postgraduate study is an important pathway for students wishing to pursue a career in research. A number of barriers affect participation in postgraduate study for students with disabilities, including:
- lack of special entry schemes into postgraduate study that recognise the impact a disability may have had on undergraduate performance
- limited numbers of equity scholarships targeted to assist students with disabilities in to postgraduate study
- lack of awareness of disability issues with the postgraduate supervisors of students with disabilities
- Government incentives for timely completion of postgraduate studies could act as a disincentive for the University to enrol students with disabilities in postgraduate courses if it is likely that their disability may result in their studies taking longer to complete
