AEA Case StudiesMental Health ConditionA student approaches the FDCO for assistance informing him that he has a psychiatric disorder and feels that he needs additional time in examinations. This condition is an ongoing disability and the student is referred to the Disability Liaison Unit. The student's needs are assessed by the DLU and an AEA Application and Notification form are completed. These are then forwarded to the FDCO and to Student Administration. The application is approved and the student sits the examination in Wilson Hall Foyer with additional time. Temporary InjuryA student approaches the FDCO for assistance informing her that he has broken his wrist playing football. This is a temporary disability and can be handled internally. The FDCO consulted the Guidelines for Adjustments for Temporary Disabilities and thinks that 15 per minutes additional time writing time and 5 minutes per hour for rest breaks is appropriate. The FDCO consults with the Disability Liaison Unit to confirm that this is appropriate. The Faculty Disability Contact Officer seeks approval for the additional time from the designated staff member and then informs Student Admin that the student needs to sit in Wilson Hall Foyer with additional time. Student Admin contacts the student to advise them of the alternative arrangements. IllnessA student rings the FDCO informing her that she has a Meningococcal Infection, and needs to defer her examination. The Faculty Disability Contact Officer contacts the Health Service and is informed that this is a serious and contagious condition and that it would be appropriate to defer her examination. The student will be required to provide the faculty with medical documentation to substantiate the illness. StressA student approaches the FDCO and is visibly distressed. The student stated that he is very stressed and wants to defer the examination. The Faculty Disability Contact Officer asks the student if he has a disability to which he says he does not. The FDCO advises the student that stress itself is not sufficient to defer an exam or provide additional time, and that if he is very distressed he should contact the Counselling or Health Service. The student subsequently sees a Doctor from the Health Service who diagnoses an ongoing anxiety disorder. The student is referred to the Disability Liaison Unit and the standard AEA procedure is followed. An AEA application and Notification form are forwarded to Student Admin and the Faculty Disability Contact Officer, the application is approved and the examination is arranged in Wilson Hall Foyer. |
