Faculty Disability Contact Officers (FDCOs)
In 1997 the role of the Faculty Disability Contact Officer was formalised in the Academic
Board approved "Guidelines for Alternative Examination Arrangements". FDCOs are designated
faculty representatives, nominated by the Dean, who fulfill the role of approving and
processing Alternative Examination Arrangements (AEA) that are applied for by students
with disabilities and DLU.
Whilst still fulfilling this primary function, the role of the FDCO has evolved over
time due mainly to increased numbers of students with disabilities, increased confidence
of FDCO staff and more effective networking and liaison with the DLU. FDCOs now provide
an invaluable link between students, the Disability Liaison Unit, faculties and
departments for communication, administrative processes and information.
Larger faculties such as Science and Arts also have Departmental Disability
Contact Officers (DDCOs). In these faculties, AEA applications are still forwarded
to the relevant FDCO but these staff often liaise with the relevant Departmental
Contacts to ensure appropriate communication and implementation requirements are followed.
