Special Consideration

Statue 12.4 (PDF : 12KB) outlines the University's expectations in relation to additional assessment and Special Consideration.

Essentially Special Consideration is available when:

  1. At any time, a student's work during the academic year has to a substantial degree been hampered by illness or other cause; or
  2. A student has been prevented by illness or other cause from preparing for all or part of a component of assessment; or
  3. A student was to a substantial degree adversely affected by illness or other cause during the performance of a component of assessment.

The nature and impact of a students disability in the academic environment means that many students with disabilities are likely to make use of the Special Consideration system as a vehicle to highlight how their performance is substantially affected by their illness or impairment. Students often use the Special Consideration process as a means of obtaining a reasonable adjustment.

As an adjunct to the Special Consideration process the University has endorsed as general principle (Academic Board, meeting 7/03, resolution 12) that states that students with disabilities may only request Special Consideration on the basis of their disability when they have registered with the DLU and the accommodations provided under the Disability Discrimination Act are insufficient to address the disadvantage that the student may experience in relation to the examination or assessment.
