ExtensionsExtensions are one of the most common forms of reasonable adjustments that students with disabilities request and receive. Extensions often provide an avenue for students who are experiencing difficulties with their wellbeing to be able to keep linked in with their studies. DLU staff regularly approach academics directly with extension requests. The DLU staff will often give a brief basis for the reason for the request and propose a new deadline. When determining a deadline, DLU staff consider the students health, progress in subject to date, demands of other subjects, other commitments (eg. work, children) and realistic timelines for completion. All of these factors form the foundation of determining a reasonable adjustment. Request for extensions may range from several days to several months depending on the issues a student has been experiencing. Most extension requests are for a two week period. Ultimately lecturers or faculty staff determine whether a request will be approved. Faculties and departments should continue to make students aware of any need to complete extension request forms. DLU staff regularly work in partnership with staff when considering extension requests so that all relevant issues are canvassed. If a student approaches you directly with an extension request that you feel unsure about approving, please feel comfortable to contact the DLU to discuss the issue. |
