Accessible Formats

Many students with a print disability undertake studies at the University. A person with a print disability may be unable:

  • to visually process print material due to a vision impairment, learning disability or other perceptual condition,
  • to hold or manipulate books or other texts, or
  • to maintain the focus required to read

The University has a legal obligation to ensure that students with a print disability receive equitable access to learning materials. The Disability Standards for Education, which provide a framework to guide the University in meeting its legal obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act state that "the course or program study materials are [must be] made available in a format that is appropriate for the student and, where conversion of materials into alternative accessible formats is required, the student is not disadvantaged by the time taken for conversion".

Predating the Disability Standards for Education, the University had identified issues regarding the timeliness and quality of material available for students with a print disability. In September 2002 Academic Board approved three recommendations in improving information access for students with a print disability. These are:

  1. Introduction of threshold standards for reading pack quality (print quality standards)
  2. Introduction of threshold standards for timely availability of course materials (timing standards);
  3. development of University guidelines for accessible on-line course materials, and the support for and monitoring of their implementation.

All academic staff are expected to be familiar with the Information Access by Vision Impaired Students threshold standards (PDF : 48KB) outlined by Academic Board. The required standards are outlined in checklist format in the brochure "Improving Information Access for Students with a Print Disability: Guidelines for Staff".
