Teaching and Learning

University staff will not always be aware if they will be teaching a student with a disability. Whilst the DLU promotes disclosure by students with disabilities, some students may choose not to inform academic staff for a variety of reasons. Whilst academic staff are limited in the nature of specific supports they are able to implement if they have not been made aware of a students individual circumstances, there are numerous generic teaching strategies that can be incorporated into a class that foster a more inclusive and positive learning environment.

The Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training hosts an array of disability/education related resources. Bookmarking this site for reference is highly recommended.

Additional information is also available on the Creating Accessible Teaching and Support (CATS) site which has been developed by The Carrick institute.

The University of Melbourne's Academic Board has published strategic plans and guidelines related to Teaching and Learning.

The Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) also has resources available for academic staff.
