Confidentiality and Disclosure

Issues relating to confidentiality and disclosure are important for most students with disabilities. All University staff are encouraged to create an environment where students feel confident that in disclosing personal or health information, that this information will be treated appropriately. Some students choose not to disclose their disability beyond the DLU for fear their information will be treated inappropriately. There are also students on campus who choose not to disclose to the DLU - these students are then limited in the type and amount of support that the University can realistically offer. All staff are required to comply with the University privacy policy and the University Equal Opportunity policy.

The DLU advises students with disabilities that they are not obliged to disclose their disability but also that staff of the University will not be able to meet specific needs if they have not been informed of a student's individual circumstances. For information presented to students on this topic go to Disclosure Information on the student's section of the DLU webpage.

Choosing your path is a web resource focusing on issues related to disclosure. One section is tailored to the issues pertinent to educators and employers. This resource also explores the rights and responsibilities of both students and staff in educational institutions at different stages of a students candidature, with regard to disclosing personal information.

The FAQ's section of the staff handbook provides additional information with regard to confidentiality and disclosure.
