Referral

Referring students to the DLU can at times feel awkward, but most students who follow up recommendations from staff and visit the DLU express relief that the service is available. At times, the word 'disability' can be off-putting to students who do not necessarily identify as having a disability. The majority of students receiving support from the DLU have a hidden disability such as a mental health condition, learning disability or chronic medical condition. Students often feel more comfortable accessing the service once they are aware that the DLU works within a confidential framework, similar to a counselling service.

When should a student be referred?

A student can be referred to the DLU at any time - not just when they are experiencing difficulties with their study or wellbeing. Students with disabilities who are currently managing study may still be interested to know of the DLU and the services it offers. The DLU can provide information on upcoming activities, specific programs (such as the WAM employment mentoring program), funding schemes and provide referrals to internal and external organisations.

Students with disabilities who are experiencing difficulties are advised to contact the DLU to explore the types of services we offer. Students with disabilities who are returning to study are also encouraged to be directed to the DLU.

It can be difficult to refer someone to the appropriate service if they have not disclosed that they have a disability. Advice on managing these circumstances can be found in the FAQ section of this handbook.

Many students acquire or are diagnosed with a disability during their studies. The DLU can work with students to develop strategies that assist in the transition to managing studies with a disability.

How to refer

Often the best way to refer students to the DLU is to provide them with some basic information and contact details and leave it to them to initiate contact. The DLU has handy sized bookmark which can be distributed to students (your faculty office should have a supply of these). Directing students to the DLU webpage can also allow them the opportunity to peruse the service in a non-intimidating way and then decide if they wish to follow up your referral. There is no need to phone ahead unless either yourself or the student feel this would be beneficial.

Alternatively, you can refer students to the Disability Contact Officer in your faculty who may be able to assist the student, and can also act as a link between the faculty and the DLU.
