Physical Access and Accessible Parking

Despite being one of the oldest universities in Australia , with many heritage buildings, the University is continually making significant advances in providing integrated and independent physical access for people with disabilities. The University of Melbourne has a number of strategies embedded to ensure that accessibility is considered whenever building works of any type or size are undertaken. Specific access information is as follows:

Access Map

The University of Melbourne Access Map provides information such as thoroughfares, accessible entry and exit points for each building, theatre locations etc to assist people with disabilities to navigate the Parkville campus. Copies of this map are available from the DLU and the Information Centre.

Access to Lecture Theatres

Most lecture theatres and teaching spaces are accessible. If you do require rooms with specific access e.g. wheelchair or scooter access then it is best to investigate access as soon as you make your subject selection. Teaching Spaces Services provide an overview of all of the University teaching spaces and give a brief access description. If you believe one of your venues is inaccessible it is best to contact your Faculty Disability Contact Officer as soon as possible.

Accessible Parking

The University provides a number of accessible on-campus parking spaces for people with a disability. A permit is required to park in these spaces.

Eligibility for a parking permit is assessed through the University's Health Service. An appointment should be made with a doctor of the Health Service. At the time of making your appointment you are requested to advise that you will be discussing the need for a parking permit.

University Health Service telephone: 8344 6904 or 8344 6905.

People with a temporary disability may apply for a temporary parking permit directly to Mrs Pat Morris, Permits Officer in the Parking Office. A medical certificate must be provided that clearly outlines why you require temporary on-campus parking and the duration the permit is required. The Parking Office is located at 215 Grattan Street.

A fee is charged for all parking permits. Students who are experiencing financial hardship may apply to Financial Aid for financial support or to have the fee waived.

Accessible parking locations are indicated in the Access Map, available from the DLU or the Information Centre. Additional parking information can be obtained from the parking website.

Many students also obtain a disabled car-parking permit from their local council or the City of Melbourne to enable them to use designated street parking outside of the University precinct. Contact your local council for details.

Notifying the University of Access Problems

The University appreciates feedback from students regarding access difficulties as this information assists with planning priorities. Completing a Risk Management Incident Form (PDF : 44Kb) ensures that your identification of a physical barrier will be lodged with the University for consideration when building and/or grounds works decisions are made.
