Postgraduate Information

There are a large number of postgraduate students with disabilities spread across all faculties of the University.

Many of the services listed on previous pages are available to all students of the University regardless of the studies they are engaged in. Many of the issues previously discussed such as disclosure and self-advocacy may have additional relevance as some postgraduates operate without the networks that can develop in structured/scheduled classes.

Other issues for postgraduate students may be related to returning to study, being a mature age student, and/or issues related to isolation especially for research students. The following links provide useful additional information.

The Graduate Centre. The Grad centre webpage also has access information for students and outlines information regarding a carrel that is specifically available for use by students with disabilities.

Eleven practices of effective postgraduate supervisors (PDF : 3.88Mb) is a booklet available to supervisors which is also useful for students to familiarise themselves with. It raises issues which may need to be addressed to enhance a positive working relationship with your supervisor.

University of Melbourne Postgraduate Association (UMPA) is the student representative body for postgraduate students. They offer a range of services and you should be familiar with what support and services they can provide.

The Language and Learning Skills Unit often run classes specific to the needs of postgraduate students.
