Computer Costs
The University provides free access to many computers located in information technology areas, computer laboratories, libraries, research / graduate studies facilities, and student service centres.
Currently in Melbourne, prices for new computers are in the following ranges (in Australian dollars):
Personal computers
Standard $900 - $1,500
More powerful $1,800 - $2,500
Laptop / Notebook computers
Standard $1,200 - $1,800
More powerful $2,000 - $3,000
Second-hand computers, which will be acceptable for standard applications (such as Word, Excel and the internet), are often advertised on the Student Union website.
Often owners are trying to sell their computers to upgrade to more powerful models. Check the Trading Post newspaper, local newspapers, campus notice boards, swap meets, or ask friends. Depreciation means that you can always find what you are looking for second hand, at reduced prices.
Computer Loans
The Baillieu Library and the University of Melbourne Postgraduate Association (UMPA) have laptop computer loan programs for currently enrolled students.
Printers
Prices for new printers are generally in the following ranges:
Standard - Colour (inkjet) $100 - $350
Laser - Colour $500 - $800
Note: The most expensive on-going printing cost is usually the purchase of printer cartridges.
Internet
There are many internet service providers from which to choose. Monthly costs range from:
Dial-up service $20 - $60
Broadband $30 - $70
Finance for computers
An application for a long-term loan will be considered for the purchase of a personal computer or a laptop computer. Usually the applicant needs to demonstrate that they have a special need for a computer, because of the type of course, or specialised software needs, or difficulties accessing the computers provided on campus, due to distance or disability.
Contact the Melbourne University Credit Union and the major banks about their student loan schemes, which may be available to assist you with the purchase of a computer. Some of the major banks will allow you to defer repayment of your loan until after your degree, but interest will usually apply.
Virtual Communities is an organisation that is working with the support of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) to provide reasonable computer deals.
