Women's health

General practitioners at the UoM health service can provide students with care related to their women’s health needs such as pap smears, breast examinations and gynaecological concerns.

Pap Smear

Pap smears are a simple procedure where a small amount of cells are taken from the cervix and tested for abnormalities. The purpose of a pap smear is to find changes in cells that may become cancerous if not detected early. It is recommended that women who have ever had sex and are 18 years and over should have a pap smear every two years. All doctors at the UoM Health Service can perform pap smears on patients.

To make an appointment for a pap smear please call the UoM Health Service.

Cervical Cancer Vaccine

There are two types of cervical cancer vaccine available at the UoM Health Service. These are Gardasil and Cervarix. Gardasil provides immunisation against 4 strains of the Human Papilloma Virus (HOV) which are types 16, 18, 6 and 11, compared to Cervarix which provides immunisation against 2 strains of HPV (types 16 and 18).

HPV types 16 and 18 which are in both Gardasil and Cervarix cause 70% of cervical cancer cases. HPV Types 6 and 11 cause 90% of genital warts cases.

For more information please make an appointment to see a doctor at the UoM Health Service.

Breast Examinations

Self-breast examinations should be completed at least once a month, however the more often the better. You are the best person to detect changes in your breasts which is best achieved through regularly checking them for any changes. Breast examinations by your doctor should occur every 1-2 years or if you have detected changes in your breasts.

For further information please make and appointment.

You can also refer to the websites below for advice about breast examinations including a demonstration on way to conduct a self-breast examination.
