Living With Other People

The people you live with largely influence the atmosphere in your home.

It's important to remember this when deciding who will be suitable to live with and whether you will get along well as housemates. Keep in mind that being great friends may not necessarily make you compatible housemates.

Think about who you would like to live with:

  • a family;
  • other undergraduates;
  • other postgraduates;
  • professionals;
  • a mix of the above;
  • nobody - you'd prefer to live on your own.

If you choose to live with other people, think about how you would like to interact with them.

Would you prefer your household to be:

  • communal where you share cooking, cleaning and perhaps contribute to a kitty for general expenses like milk, cleaning products etc; or
  • independent where you do your own food shopping and cooking.

If you plan to move into a share house remember to ask lots of good questions to decide whether the options will suit your needs. A list of good questions to ask potential housemates is available in our ‘Renting & Sharing a Property’ booklet, available on our Publications page.

Also refer to our Share House Disputes page if you find yourself in a disagreement with housemates.
