Language Skills for Research Program
The Language Skills for Research Program is an English language program designed to develop the speaking and writing skills of first year AusAID research students (PhD and Masters).
Program outline
The course is individualised to the needs of each student by the Language and Learning Skills (LLSU) tutor. A pre-course meeting will be arranged with students to elicit their concerns and interests.
Seminars will include discussion and analysis of sample texts as well as practical strategies to address their concerns. Classes will also be a springboard for further individual work and specific tasks on which they report back and discuss difficulties and successes e.g:
- Make an appointment with the research consultant in the Graduate Centre regarding appropriate search terms and databases for their topic. Report back to the group on their findings.
- Locate on the Australian Digital Thesis site at least 3 abstracts for theses in their field.
- Note the content and format of abstract and report to class on similarities and differences.
- Read two literature reviews or thesis introductions and complete a checklist of features and elements.
- Attend a departmental postgraduate seminar, take notes on presentation style etc and report back to the group.
