Visa Information
Permission to Work
All student visas will initially have Condition 8101 - No Work. If you or your family members wish to work while you are studying, you must apply for Permission to Work. Please refer to the fact sheet for more information.
AusAID Dependant Visa
Family members who intend to stay with you while you are studying in Australia will need to apply for a student dependant visa. The AusAID office in your home country will be able to assist you with the application.
For international students, the term "family members" covers your spouse (including a de facto), unmarried dependent children under 18, and a fiancé whom you intend to marry within three months of arrival in Australia.
Generally, periods of stay granted to family members reflect those of the student. For more information see Family Matters.
Tourist Visa
Any relatives who intend to come and visit for a short period of time while you are studying in Australia will need to apply for a tourist visa. A supporting letter is not required by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). However, you will be requested for a letter of invitation, written by you, inviting your family to visit. You can refer to this sample invitation letter.
