As the summer break draws near, a few tips on staying safe: protect yourself from the sun, swim between the flags, and always swim with friends. Read more about water safety. If travelling to bushfire-prone areas, check for warnings via 774 ABC radio or the CFA website. Most of all, have fun!

Multicultural Hub

Stop by the Multicultural Hub — a friendly place in the city where people from Melbourne’s many different cultures can get together and work, share and learn in a safe and supportive environment. Programs include a film club, English conversation groups, and shopping and cooking in Australia.

Build your skills for academic success

Classes and workshops with Academic Skills Unit include targeted sessions for students new to Australian academic culture. A range of free short courses include Effective Reading and Note-taking, Oral Presentations, Communicating Across Cultures and more. Enrol now or learn more.

Campus security notices

Campus security encourages you to be aware that opportunistic theft occurs on campus – often in libraries and crowded areas. Never leave your belongings unattended, and register your laptop and bike details so they have a higher chance of being returned if stolen.

Be a volunteer tutor

The Student Union is now looking for volunteer VCE tutors.

Your safety

Practical advice on keeping yourself safe: to be well informed and aware of your surroundings is the best protection for all members of the community. Also consider signing up for your Neighbourhood Watch newsletter and attending street safety workshops.

"The Couch" — International Student Centre

"The Couch" – International Student Centre aims to provide a safe and free space at night time for international students studying in Melbourne to socialise, relax, rest study, and seek information and assistance. Open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5pm-10pm (entry is free and food is available each night).

Ask Counselling

It can sometimes be a difficult step seeing a counsellor face-to-face. Ask Counselling provides an online opportunity to gain help, learn about other students' concerns and possibly share your own.

Swine flu information

The University of Melbourne has set up a Swine flu response page with hygiene tips and information for students.

Laptop and Bike Register

The Student Union and Victoria Police have introduced a laptop and bike register for Melbourne University students. Use this service to register the serial numbers for your bike or laptop computer with a Victoria Police Database and help your chances of getting these items returned if they are stolen. Register online via the Student Union website.

Textbook recycling

The University Bookshop offers students a Bookshop voucher valued at 50% of the current retail price upon return of selected textbooks.
