Adjusting to Melbourne Life

Please note which campus of the University of Melbourne that you are attending. Some regional campuses are situated one to three hours by car from the City of Melbourne. If you are attending a regional campus, please refer to your campus map from the link given below.

It can be challenging for some international students coming from a smaller city to study in a large campus and live in Melbourne or for students coming from a big city to study in a rural campus outside metropolitan areas. It will take a while to get to know your campus and surrounding areas.

Tips for adjusting to your new campus and city

  1. Plan to arrive early before the Enrolment and Orientation period. This will allow you to explore your new campus and new city or town.
  2. Attend the Enrolment and Orientation programs and activities. Our mentors and ISS staff can help you adjust to your new campus and city.
  3. Choose a good housing option that suits your budget, needs and lifestyle.
  4. Consider physical aspects like location and travel time to your campus and household amenities.
  5. Talk to International Student Advisers at International Student Services, Student Housing Adviser at Housing Services or senior international students if you have questions or concerns.
  6. Take a walk around your campus to get to know the buildings, lecture theatres, resources and support services available on campus. Maps and signs are available around your campus.
  7. Melbourne is a reasonably safe city however as with any city in the world you need to be mindful of your safety.
  8. Learn more about local areas around your campus by visiting the links below.
