Volunteers and mentors
Student volunteers and mentors are an integral part of the ISS team. Together, we help enrich the Melbourne Experience for new international students and their families. Both local and international students are very welcome to be a part of our events.
Volunteering helps you develop your teamwork and communication skills. You also get to meet new people from all over the world and share your experiences with others.

Please note that all volunteers must be able to attend the compulsory training session and the actual event.
Volunteering opportunities
Parents and Partners Cultural Tour Guide Assistants

The Parent's and Partner's tour takes parents of new international students around campus, demonstrating that the University is home to galleries and museums, with examples of fine architecture, outdoor sculptures and beautiful gardens.
Student volunteers assist staff tour guides in sharing their perspectives on the campus and student experience. We are looking for currently enrolled University of Melbourne students who:
- are friendly and outgoing with good communications skills
- can attend the compulsory training session on 12 February 2010
- can attend the actual session during Orientation in Semester 1 2010 (Tuesday 23 February - Friday 26 February)
Getting to know Australians
The GTKA workshop is an important element of the Orientation program for new international students, and aims to give practical assistance on cultural and social topics associated with arriving to live and study in a new country.
Participating in this session can be a great way to share your current knowledge of Australian culture and meet some different people from a diverse range of countries. We are looking for currently enrolled University of Melbourne students who:
- are interested in new students and their transition to University
- have outstanding cross-cultural understanding and interpersonal skills
- are keen to engage in the diversity of the Parkville campus
- can attend the compulsory training session on 19 February 2010
- can attend the actual session during Orientation in Semester 1 2010 (Tuesday 23 February - Friday 26 February)
Pre-departure briefings
Applications are now closed for Semester 1 2010
The purpose of the Pre-departure briefings is to introduce new and prospective international students to life on campus and in Melbourne before their arrival. Student volunteers lead small group discussions with new students about life in Melbourne and may also be required to assist with administrative tasks. We are looking for currently enrolled University of Melbourne students who:
- have an interest in new students transition to study at the University of Melbourne
- have good knowledge of practical issues facing new students preparing to study in Melbourne
- have good interpersonal and communication skills
- will be in the relevant country and available to assist at the time of the briefings in June (travel costs are not provided)
Successful candidates, after the interview, will be required to attend a one hour training session, date to be advised.
Welcome Centre

The Welcome Centre is open during Enrolment and Orientation each semester and is the first point of call for all new students to ask questions about getting started at University. Student volunteers assist International Student Services in staffing the Welcome Centre and assist new students with queries about getting started on enrolment, orientation, campus life and living in Melbourne.
All applicants must attend a 1 hour group-based interview. We are looking for currently enrolled University of Melbourne students who:
- have an interest in and high level understanding of new students transition to study at the University of Melbourne
- have a high level of multicultural awareness and cross-cultural communication skills
- have good familiarity with the services and facilities of the University
- have excellent interpersonal & communication skills
- have an ability to work in a team and follow direction
- are available to attend one group interview session during October 2010
Volunteers successful at interview need then:
- attend a compulsory training session on 11 February 2010
- be available for at least four 3-hour rosters between Tuesday 16 February 2009 and Friday 26 February 2010
- be available to assist at the International Student Briefings on Thursday 18 February and Friday 19 February 2010
