Long Term Housing

Other housing options

Study Abroad and Exchange students can choose from a range housing options in Melbourne. The housing options available to all students in Melbourne are explained in the Housing Guide. Specialised housing packages are also available for SAEX students.

Factors to consider when choosing your housing include:

It is imperative you organise your housing early and consider a number of different options. Do not leave this to the last minute!

Melbourne is currently experiencing a low rental vacancy rate and there is a high demand for affordable housing, especially before each semester. Ensure you have a back-up plan in the event that you are unsuccessful in securing your first housing preference. Students who arrive in Melbourne without pre-arranged housing may require temporary accommodation for a longer period.

Residential Colleges

Application deadlines

If you are interested in living at the University’s residential colleges, you should submit an application through OASIIS. Most colleges offer a single, furnished room with communal bathroom, kitchen, laundry and common areas.  They do not offer self-catering facilities, but provide most meals, including vegetarian.

Places in residential colleges are limited and entry is highly competitive, particularly at the start of the academic year. Typically 1 in 3 students who apply for a college place is successful.  For this reason, when applying for a college place through OASIIS, you are also required to nominate a student apartment or hostel preference for a specialised SAEX housing package. In the event you are not offered a college place, your email address will be forwarded to your nominated student apartment or hostel provider (vacancy permitting). It is then your responsibility to follow up with securing your SAEX housing package.

Specialised SAEX housing packages

Student apartments or hostels are close to campus, student-focused and generally cheaper than the residential colleges. They are furnished and have self-catering facilities. Housing providers currently offering semester-based leases to University of Melbourne SAEX students are:

If you do not apply for a residential college place, you are welcome to consider a specialised SAEX housing package with the providers listed above. The University will not manage your housing application.

You will be responsible for applying directly to your chosen provider, informing them that you are a University of Melbourne SAEX student in order to qualify for the specialised SAEX package.

Please apply before the end of May to ensure availability for semester two.

Other housing options

There are many other housing options in Melbourne’s private rental market which SAEX students can consider. The crucial thing to keep in mind is the length of your stay in Melbourne, as many housing options are suited to tenancy periods of six months or more, e.g share housing, vacant property rental.

AccomNet is a housing advertisement service provided by Student Housing Services. AccomNet lists available housing options, which can be viewed on-campus on the Student Housing Services noticeboards or online.
