There are a range of housing options in Melbourne. The Student Housing Options & Location Guide is a good place to start exploring your student housing options around campus (there is a location map on the last page).

As a study abroad and exchange student you can also consider:

Things to consider when choosing your housing:

Organise your housing early and consider several options. Do not leave this to the last minute. Make sure you have a backup plan if you do not get your first housing preference.

If you arrive in Melbourne without first arranging your housing, you may need to stay in temporary accommodation for a longer period.

For general housing options, go to the Student Housing Services website or see the Housing Guide. AccomNet is an online housing database that allows you to search for available vacancies.

Residential colleges

If you plan to stay at one of the University’s residential colleges, please submit an online application. Most colleges offer a single, furnished room with communal bathrooms, kitchen, laundry and common areas. Most meals are provided (including vegetarian), but there are no self-catering facilities.

There are limited places in residential colleges. About one in three students who apply are successful. When applying for a place at a residential college, you must also choose a preferred student apartment or hostel for a specialised SAEX housing package. If you do not get a place in a residential college,we will forward your email address to this student apartment or hostel (vacancy permitting) with instructions on how to apply. You are then responsible for following up and securing your housing package before their given deadline.

If you do not apply for a place at a residential college, you are welcome to consider a specialised SAEX housing package with the providers listed above.

You are responsible for applying directly to your chosen provider, informing them that you are a University of Melbourne Study Abroad and Exchange student in order to qualify for the specialised SAEX package. Please apply as early as possible.
