Words to watch
You may find some terms used during enrolment and orientation differ from your home country or institution, this list can help:
- Campus The campus is the grounds in which the University is situated.
- Course A sequence of subjects which make up a degree.
- Departments and Schools Most university faculties are divided into several departments or schools, each of which deals with similar discipline areas (school) or an individual area of study (department).
- Faculty The University is divided into a number of faculties, each of which deals with a general area of study. Most faculties are also sub-divided into smaller schools and departments.
- Handbook Each year the University publishes a handbook which details all courses and subjects and provides links to the timetable.
- Lecture Large, formal classes in which lecturers present course material to all students enrolled in a given subject.
- Major A sequence of subjects which make up the main area of study in a course.
Semester There are two main semesters in each academic year. There are twelve weeks of classes plus an assessment period each semester. There is also a shorter optional summer semester in January/February each year. - Student Adviser A professional member of staff who provides students with detailed advice on options in terms of courses, majors, subject choices, breadth studies, graduate options, enrichment opportunities and support services.
- Student Centre Your first point of contact for any enrolment related query, course advice and referral to other University services, staffed by experienced Student Advisers. Student Centre contact details are located on the back cover of this guide.
- Subject Each course is divided into individual subjects. Descriptions of the subjects offered each year are printed in the handbook.
- Tute or tutorial Usually less formal than a lecture, tutes are small classes in which material from lectures and readings can be discussed in more detail.
- Vice-Chancellor The most senior administrative and academic member of the University staff. The current Vice-Chancellor is Professor Glyn Davis.

Am I a Study Abroad or Exchange student?
You are a Study Abroad and Exchange student if:
- you will be studying at the University of Melbourne for one or two semesters; and
- you continue to be enrolled at your home institution/university.
