Background
The University of Melbourne is required to inform the Department of Immigration when international students on student visa change to new course within the University.
Application process
How do I apply for a reduced study load?You must have approval from your faculty to reduce your study load. When you submit your request to reduce your study load you must attach appropriate supporting documentation.

Step 1 |
Discuss your eligibility for admission with a Student Adviser for the faculty you would like to transfer to. |
Step 2 |
Apply to transfer to another course via Student Information System or download a Course Change form [PDF 27KB] and submit it to the faculty that administers the new course. |
Step 3 |
Upon acceptance in the new course, you must discontinue your enrolment in the old course. |
Visa implications
After you have transferred to your new course, you will receive a new Confirmation of Enrolment (COE). The Department of Immigration (DIAC) will be notified of the changes in your enrolment. Please note that:
- If your new course is shorter than your old course, the validity of your Student visa will change according to the course end date on your new COE:
- If you complete your course before November, your visa will usually be valid for two months after your course end date on your COE;
- If you complete your course in November or December, your visa will usually be valid until 15 March of the following year.
- If your new course is longer than your old course, you should renew your Student visa one or two months before it expires.
- If you are transferring:
- to a coursework degree and you hold a Student (Postgraduate Research) visa (Subclass 574), you must apply for a new Student (Higher Education) visa (Subclass 573) after you receive your new COE.
- to a research degree course and you hold a Student (Higher Education) visa (Subclass 573), you must apply for a new Student (Postgraduate Research) visa (Subclass 574) after you receive your new COE.
