Visa validity
A student visa allows multiple entries to Australia. Usually a visa is granted for the duration of your course, however if you have changed courses, transferred from another education provider or changed the duration of your course, the validity of your visa may change depending on the course end date of your Confirmation of Enrolment (COE):
- If your student visa expires before the expected completion date of your course, you will need to renew your visa a few weeks before it expires.
- If you complete your course before your visa expires, your visa validity will change according to the table below:
Course duration |
Visa validity |
|---|---|
| 10 months or less | Your visa will usually be valid for one month after the end date of your course as indicated on your COE. |
| Longer than 10 months | If your course ends before November, your visa will usually be valid for two months after the end date of your course as indicated on your COE. If your course ends in November or December, your visa will usually be valid until 15 March of the following year. |
Family members
Most students can bring their spouse and dependent children to Australia. They can be included in your visa application or lodge a separate application if they join you at a later stage.
See DIAC: Bringing Family
Dependent family members who join you in Australia on student visas are usually able to stay the same length of time as you. However they cannot stay if you have departed Australia, for instances when you are granted leave of absence or after you have completed your course.
