Organisation: Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA)
Why did you get involved in Conservation Volunteers Australia?
In secondary school, my geography teacher gave us a lecture about the environment, pollution and overpopulation. I was so concerned when I heard about global warming, deforestation and the holes in the ozone layer. From that moment on I knew I wanted to contribute to helping our environment in some way.
What does your volunteering with CVA involve?
Working within a group, weeding and restoring indigenous plants as well as planting new ones.
Did your experience meet your expectations?
When I joined CVA I expected to give a lot and to receive a lot as well. I realised that mutual benefit from the very first day with the organisation. It was more than I anticipated. I thought I would just be weeding and planting but in the process I developed a greater understanding and appreciation of the environment.
How have you benefited from the experience?
Working with CVA has been an enjoyable and beneficial experience. Not only have I gained knowledge about different plants and trees and enhanced my time management and communications skills, I've also had the opportunity to meet people from all walks of live with different backgrounds and different levels of education.
