Organisation: Interchange Western

Why did you get involved in Interchange Western?

I had never worked with people with disabilities before and wanted to get some experience in this area. I also enjoy working with youth. I think the organisation valued having a male on board, as there aren't many in the field. It was helpful when dealing with teenage boys and making them feel comfortable.

What does your volunteering with Interchange Western involve?

Interchange provides support to children with a disability and their families, through the volunteer host carer service. One of the highlights was actually the first day where we went to the circus - I enjoyed it as much as the kids, and realised straight away how fun, yet constantly challenging (and tiring) working with kids with disabilities can be.

How have you benefited from the experience?

I've learnt skills for working with people with disabilities, how to have more patience, to relax a bit more and that every single person is valuable, regardless of mental or physical capacity.
