Organisation: People Outdoors
Why did you get involved in People Outdoors?
People Outdoors' mission is 'Adventure for All'. It achieves this mission by providing various types of recreational programs for children, teenagers and adults with disabilities to participate in outdoor adventure programs and weekend camping experiences. I wanted to be involved with young children and a project that allowed me to be outdoors and doing a lot of activities. I thought that perhaps working with kids who have disabilities would allow me to fulfill two goals - to help others and to challenge myself.
What does your volunteering with People Outdoors involve?
Attending camps where I help people with disabilities get involved in activities and have fun.
How have you benefited from the experience?
My experience far exceeded my expectations. I only expected to go for the camps and help out. But in reality, the experience was so much deeper and richer than I could ever have imagined. I've met some wonderful kids and wonderful volunteers. I've challenged myself in terms of character - things like patience, humility, genuine concern and responsibility - all the requirements for caring for a child with disabilities.
I've learned there's a lot to do for our community and everyone of us can do our part by taking a small step forward in participation.
