Program: Student Ambassador Leadership Program (SALP)
Organisation: Sudanese Australian Integrated Learning (SAIL)

Why did you get involved in SALP (Student Ambassador Leadership Program) & SAIL (Sudanese Australian Integrated Learning)?

I joined SALP in search of a bit of change in Uni life and to gain some non-academic experiences. Our SALP Action Learning Group's aim was to do a community integration project by introducing some Australian culture to new immigrants. To achieve this we worked with SAIL, a not-for-profit organisation with similar aims and a great network in the Sudanese community.

What does your volunteering with SAIL involve?

With help from the AFL and Melbourne Museum, our group organised and hosted two trips to the MCG and the Museum, allowing members of the Sudanese community to watch their first footy match and discover more about the Australian culture.

How have you benefited from the experience?

This experience has benefited me in many aspects. In addition to the new friends and skills I got, it was a great opportunity to work with other volunteers whose work has made Melbourne such a unique place to study and live. Also, my time with SALP and SAIL has allowed me to gain a sense of community by helping disadvantaged people.
