Why did you get involved with the Victorian Aids Council?

The Victorian Aids Council is associated with decision making, education and support programs dealing with a socio-economic issue and health concern that I was interest in learning more about. I wanted to gain an insight into a global health issue whilst at the same time contribute somehow through volunteering.

What does your volunteering with the Victorian Aids Council involve?

I was actively involved in the preparation and coordination of events such as World AIDS Day, Awareness Week, the Street Appeal, training of new volunteers and the end of year christmas party.

Now on a more regular basis, I help in the small operations of the Positive Living Centre. The Positive Living Centre is a drop in centre for people living with HIV/AIDS, their partners, family and friends. It provides: laundry facilities; access to naturopathy; hairdressing; drop in meals; food pantry; and information boards and resources.

How have you benefited from the experience?

The experience allowed me to learn and think about HIV/AIDS, sexually transmissible diseases and other social problems from different perspectives and how these issues are being managed and dealt with in Victoria and Australia. I also learnt about the importance of maintaining confidentiality and professional behaviour when working with members of the Positive Living Centre. Overall, my experience was very enriching and I was pleased to know that my contribution was much appreciated.
