These workshops are for students in the second semester of writing an honours or courseworks minor thesis. The expectation is that students will be writing their thesis and will benefit from direct attention to their work as well as opportunities to discuss issues and problems with one another. The workshops are designed to function as writing clinics, focusing on different features of the thesis writing process.
There are two streams for this series of workshops:
- Sciences (venue: David Caro Podium, PHYSICS Bldg. Room 208)
- Arts and Humanities (venue: Old Arts, Room 239)
Outline for each session:
- Preparing the reader to read: introduction, table of contents
This session looks at providing the overall structure of a thesis through an examination of the Table of Contents. It also looks at the common elements in an Introduction chapter. It is expected that students will have drafted both an Introduction chapter and Table of Contents, and will be able to bring a hard copy of their drafts to class to share in small group discussion.
- Discussion of the results: analysis and tone
This session looks at the discussion section of your thesis. We will pay particular attention to argument structure, the language of analysis and academic tone. Come to this session with your Discussion chapter (or one of them if your thesis is structured topically) to share in small group discussion.
- Polishing the stone: finishing and editing
This session looks at aspects of finishing and editing your thesis, including preliminary pages, formatting, and editing for clarity and conciseness.
