Postgraduate Essentials is an online 12-week course for students commencing PhD by research, focusing on the common elements and features of postgraduate research and the required first-year tasks. As well as a wealth of information and advice on making a successful start to your PhD, the course includes videos, quizzes, checklists, animated literature searching tutorials and a range of discussion forums. An online course facilitator fosters development of an interactive peer community, and the course experience provides a useful introduction to online communication and resources.

ASU also provides non-credit, online, tutor-moderated writing courses through Gate 2 of the AIRport site. Students can enrol and take these courses in their own time.

Cultural diversity

Cultural diversity enriches all aspects of academic and social life, and encourages approaches to teaching and learning that are both innovative and relevant to an increasingly global academic environment. The cultural diversity site will be of interest to staff working with students from different backgrounds. As well as the cultural diversity policy at the University of Melbourne it includes practical strategies to encourage diversity and inclusivity, and helpful information on developing a culturally inclusive classroom.

The Centre for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE)

This site is an excellent resource for university teaching staff. The Centre for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE) is a national and international leader in higher education policy research and educational development. CSHE engages in independent, research-based advice and support on matters of teaching and learning, the student experience, professional development for academics, and quality assurance policies and processes.

Academic honesty and plagiarism

This site contains the university's policy on plagiarism and includes advice for students on how to prevent plagiarism and advice to staff on how to reduce opportunities for cheating. Also includes sample cover sheets for assignments and other links.

Transition and Orientation Programs

As well as information for both undergraduate and postgraduate students in transition, this site has useful information for staff on the various staff committees, reports from the transition program and resources that the transition unit can offer to staff.

A useful interactive source from Duke University to which to refer students. Includes guidelines to citing sources and avoiding plagiarism.

The Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL)

A comprehensive online writing laboratory. Includes handouts and exercises for students on all aspects of writing including grammar and punctuation, materials for ESL students, links to style manuals and resources and Powerpoint presentations for teachers to use.

Guide to Grammar & Writing

A comprehensive guide to all aspects of grammar and syntax. It includes exercises for students.

Opening All Options

Learning Disability (LD) is becoming a major issue in higher education institutions throughout the world. This University of Tasmania site includes useful definitions of LD, suggestions for identification and testing of LD, practical teaching strategies and information on assistive technologies.
