Guidelines for Staff

Introduction

A new, substantially revised Student Discipline Statute comes in to operation on 26 July, 2004 the beginning of Semester 2.

The statute covers both general and academic misconduct and appeals against penalties imposed as a result of these types of misconduct. Staff should note that time limits and procedures are spelled out in detail for each part of this process. The academic misconduct provisions apply to VCA students whereas, once the VCA has enacted its own discipline statute, the general misconduct provisions will not.

A student is entitled to appeal against findings of and penalties imposed for general and academic misconduct.

The Academic Registrar will keep a record of all findings of general and academic misconduct. It is recommended that staff consult the record in order to achieve consistency of decisions and penalties across faculties and over time.

All aspects of the disciplinary proceedings are to be kept in the strictest confidence.

The following information provides broad guidelines on the operation of the statute. They need to be read in conjunction with the statute.

Please contact the Academic Registrar if you have any queries or concerns.
