"The qualities that distinguish Melbourne University from other tertiary institutions are unquestionably its exemplary academic reputation and the quality of its teaching. My mother completed a PhD in Engineering at the University and had only extremely positive and enjoyable memories of that period in her life. Without doubt, the scholarship will greatly enhance my experiences. By relieving the financial burden of a tertiary education, the scholarship provides me with the freedom and flexibility to pursue my studies, without the additional pressures of having to sustain a part-time job. The Melbourne Scholarship Program has provided me with the opportunity to truly relish my time at University and has enabled me to broaden my options of possible study overseas."

Scotch Oakburn College, Launceston, Tasmania
National Scholarship, 2004
Commerce/Law

"I moved from regional Tasmania to study at Melbourne. The past few weeks have been fantastic, as the University and university life have become increasingly familiar. Living on campus at Trinity College is an opportunity to meet, and to really engage with, lots of new and interesting people - not just other university students, but also visiting academics and resident staff. The closeness of the community at Trinity has really made the transition from secondary to tertiary education much easier. One of the greatest attractions of studying at the University of Melbourne is that it combines so many fantastic amenities which are only offered in isolation at other institutions. My scholarship affords me a level of financial flexibility unparalleled at any other institution in Australia. It will allow me to focus my attention on studying and fully immerse myself in the other aspects of university life on a sporting, cultural and social level."

Lorne-Aireys Inlet College, Victoria
Access Scholarship, 2004
Engineering (Chemistry)/Science

"I moved from Aireys Inlet to study at the University of Melbourne because it offered the course and facilities I wanted. I chose to live on campus at Ormond College because it allowed me to settle in without the extra stress of providing everything for myself and it also provided me with a safe environment. It has dramatically affected how I have approached my first year of university. After completing my degree I want to work in the space industry. I would love to be part of a group of enthusiastic people interested in the area of cosmology like me, studying and researching what we like best."

Hellyer College, Burnie, Tasmania
Melbourne Indigenous Scholar, 2004

"I think that the Melbourne Scholarships Program is absolutely fantastic, because it offers students like me an opportunity to follow their high school education with the highest standard of tertiary education available. My scholarship proves to me and my family, friends and potential peers that I, as an Aboriginal student, can gain academic excellence to as high a degree, if not higher, than non-Aboriginal students. My scholarship also makes it possible for me to live in Melbourne. Without it I would either struggle to pay rent and bills, or would not have had the opportunity to go to university at all. My family supported my decision to apply to Melbourne because it had the best choice of arts subjects. I live in a flat on Lygon Street about 10 minutes walk from the University, which I really enjoy because I am not distracted by outside influences and can concentrate on my studies."

Naomi Bakker

Naomi Bakker

Clonard College, Geelong, Victoria
William Allen Stewart Establishment Bursary, 2004
Animal Science and Management

"I applied to the University of Melbourne because the friendly people at Open Day were really encouraging, and friends of mine who study at Melbourne were also very positive. Melbourne was able to offer me the course I wanted, with the option I wanted, and is located in Victoria. All the staff in my faculty are very friendly and approachable, and my subjects are taught by high-quality teaching staff. Moving away from home involves becoming more independent, self-sufficient and organised. My bursary has enabled me to live at college while I study. Choosing Whitley College was the best decision I ever made. There is such a community feeling of trust and honesty and everyone gets along really well. I feel at home among other students from rural backgrounds. I am interested in completing a PhD when I finish my degree. My interest area is livestock genetics so I would love to work in a field involving breeding programs or something along those lines. I would advise all prospective students to explore all their options; talk to people, go to open days, look on the web site and find out anything and everything. Be prepared."

"I was attracted to the University of Melbourne for a variety of reasons. I intend to major in actuarial studies and Melbourne is one of the few universities in Australia that offers such a course. Graduates from the University also enjoy great employment opportunities. My scholarship will cover the majority of my accommodation costs as well as paying my tuition fees and I can enter the workforce without having to worry about paying off debts. I recommend relocation to Melbourne to interstate students. Living away from home may be daunting, but developing independence is a great reward. Grab the opportunity and make the move, you won't regret it."

"I chose the University of Melbourne because of the quality of its staff, the availability of resources and its good reputation, especially where the Law School is concerned. Melbourne is a great place to study - the clubs and societies, free beer and the respect from other people are what makes studying at Melbourne wonderful."

Brisbane Grammar School, Queensland
National Medicine Scholarship, 2004
Medicine/Surgery/Arts

"I applied to the University of Melbourne because of my exhilarating experience at the UniSummit in 2002. There is no institution like this in Australia. As an interstate student, leaving home and moving into a single room at college was certainly a nerve-racking, but exciting milestone. The warm environment and the support structures at Trinity College ensured that the process was smooth and relatively painless."
